Perhaps you think that American hot gospel services do a lot of harm - perhaps a lot of good - but in cynical circles they are a bit of a joke. Well it was now a good few years ago that a youth sat at the back of one of those 'revivalist' meetings listening to a rip-roaring preacher called Mordecau Fowler Ham. The lad had been taken there by friends believing him to be a good young fellow but listless, with no real purpose to his life. He sort of believed in God and had a nice character, but God had no real place in his life. He was drifting.
That night the preacher did what all true gospel preachers do, he lifted up Jesus Christ, and the free gift of eternal life he offers to all who put their trust in him. The lad was impressed. He wanted to be different, but he'd tried before and failed. The preacher called people to get out of their seats and come to the front, just as they were.The lad remained glued to the pew. He was no exhibitionist. The invitation was given again and again, and the choir sang "Almost persuaded ..." - and still the lad sat there. But it was on the last verse of the hymn, in the last bit of the last verse, that the lad got up and went to the front to ask God to take over his life. An English born counsellor came to him and led him to pray the prayer of commitment to Christ and to help guide him forward. "What's your name son?" he asked, and the lad said "Sir, my name is Billy Graham!". The rest is history.
