We have been thinking about that Bible picture of the Holy Spirit as an advocate, a counsellor standing beside us in court, speaking on our behalf. Now don't for a moment imagine that this experience is reserved for people only as great as St. Paul. Why, sometimes even the most unprepared of humans have been aware of someone beside them when the going was beyond their strength.
The author of a book, "Spy on the Roof of the World", was being interviewed on B.B.C., Radio 4, in which he referred to the impossible journey two of them made through the most unimaginable horrors over the Himalayas. He said "I got the distinct impression that there was another one with us, an invisible third member". "But you are an atheist, how can you say that?" said the interviewer. "Well", he replied, "my ideas on atheism have been turned on their heads. I'm struggling now with being an agnostic". But all the same he was honest enough to admit what he experienced: someone else alongside, on their side, helping them through.
Aspley Cherry Garrard in his book "The Worst Journey in the World" described a winter journey in Antarctica's unending night. He also reports that "We had the distinct impression of another person, unseen being, beside us, helping us through when we couldn't help ourselves".
Remember the experience of King Nebuchadnezzar, who sent three men into the blazing furnace?
Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?"
They replied "Certainly O king".
He said "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed and the fourth looks like a son of the gods." Daniel 3: 24-25
You all know the story of footsteps in the sand, and the punch line 'Where were you when I needed you and there was just one set of footprints?' The answer is 'That was when I carried you my child'.

A Prayer:
Thank you Lord that when I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil for thou art with me.

Now read Numbers Chapter 22.
