We have been looking at some of the things Jesus of Nazareth said about worship, such as: worship is for God alone (amazing how simple, and yet necessary it is to remember that). The place is not important, but knowing something about God IS essential, for otherwise we maybe trying to adore some creation of our own minds, an idol in fact. So it is not so much how but whom you worship. Well, he went on explaining to a Samaritan woman that worship must be in spirit and truth. Take that word 'spirit'. Worship is a spiritual exercise, for Jesus said 'God is Spirit'. We worship on his terms and conditions, not ours - that is, on his wavelength. He draws us, He seeks us, He wants to touch us, to meet us, to empower us; worship must be in the Spirit, for God is Spirit. It is what Isaiah told Israel and the world: 'Don't come trampling God's Courts'. Speaking as for the Lord he said "I have no pleasure in your sacrificial rigmaroles and meaningless rituals. When you come with your hands full of blood I will not listen to you. Wash! Bathe! Come in penitence, willing to be changed, to be made as white as snow ... willing and obedient ...". In short, come in the Spirit which involves also everything physical. Come prepared to be moved, changed, broken, re-assembled and lit. Come empty, to be filled. That is the kind of worshipper God seeks.
Listen to Paul's word on this: Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12: 1-2
A Prayer: Lord, everything , in us and about us, is given to be a vehicle of your Spirit. Then, Lord, help us present our bodies to you in spiritual worship.
