Today, I have for you a promise so magnificent that to be sure of it is probably the most important affirmation of your whole lifetime. Before I remind you of this momentous promise, let me also remind you that in this world nothing lasts for ever - the most glorious music ends, the indescribable sunset soon gives way to gloom. Nothing lasts. Your holidays Christmas, vision - enjoyment - ecstasy and pain - life itself - all pass. They are gone in a flash.
Today, you should rejoice in two things: One the fact that nothing in this world can ever satisfy you fully. You are made for an environment greater than this world, that's why you long for something which no mountain of money, nor bodily satisfaction, nor ease, nor pleasure, can ever satisfy. You have a bigger potential than your life's span.
Two the fact that from time to time, no matter how fleetingly, you are moved by a beauty you cannot capture, and feel inadequate to respond to, except perhaps to cry. You cannot capture it, even if you were an artistic genius, you could not paint it, sculpt it, nor compose music which would convey it. These split seconds of glory are like glimpses of a glory for which you were made. Then they are gone. Like life itself.
Satan sneers his wicked whispers. 'All delusion, there is no other realm. You are an animal - you are dust and to dust you return - very soon now.
Well, it's about time we heard that promise from the Bible which, as I said, is probably the most important affirmation of your entire life. Ready?
No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind conceived what God has prepared for those who love him. 1 Corinthians 2:19
A Prayer:Lord at heart I thank you for this fair earth, and this wondrous life of struggle, but I'm homesick for heaven!
Now read: Psalm 90, and rejoice.
